A Royal Scandal (1996 film)
A Royal Scandal is a 1996 television film directed by John Erman. It stars Catherine Oxenberg as Princess Theodora of Russia and is loosely based on the life of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia. The plot centers around the Grand Duchess escaping the execution of the Romanov family and attempting to start a new life in the United States. She assumes the identity of Anna Benton and works as a waitress while trying to keep her true identity a secret from those who would exploit or harm her. The film also features Ed Begley Jr. as a reporter investigating Anna's claims and Nicol Williamson as a mysterious figure from Anastasia's past. A Royal Scandal is primarily a drama focusing on the personal struggles and emotional journey of its main character. It differs significantly from other, more historically accurate portrayals of the Romanov family's downfall and the Anastasia mystery. Critical reception was mixed.
