Balasana

Balasana, also known as Child's Pose, is a resting asana (yoga posture) in modern yoga. It is a kneeling pose where the forehead rests on the floor, and the arms are either extended forward or brought back alongside the body. Balasana is often used as a counterpose to more intense backbends or inversions, and is considered a calming and grounding posture.

Description:

In Balasana, the practitioner typically kneels on the floor with the big toes touching. The hips are brought towards the heels, although individuals with tight hips may not be able to sit all the way back. The torso is then folded forward, allowing the forehead to rest on the floor. The arms can be extended forward, palms down, or brought back alongside the body with the palms facing up. The pose is held for a period of time, allowing for relaxation and a gentle stretch in the lower back, hips, and thighs.

Benefits:

Reported benefits of Balasana include:

  • Calming the brain and helping to relieve stress and fatigue
  • Gently stretching the hips, thighs, and ankles
  • Reducing back pain and neck pain
  • Promoting relaxation

Contraindications and Cautions:

Individuals with the following conditions may need to modify or avoid Balasana:

  • Diarrhea
  • Knee injuries
  • Pregnancy (modifications may be necessary to accommodate the belly)
  • High blood pressure (propping the forehead can reduce pressure)
