Cassius Dio (consul 291)

Cassius Dio was a Roman senator who held the consulship in 291 AD alongside Gaius Iunius Tiberianus. He is distinct from the more famous historian Cassius Dio Cocceianus, who lived in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD and wrote the Roman History. Virtually nothing is known about the Cassius Dio who served as consul in 291 beyond his name and the fact of his consulship. His tenure occurred during the reign of Emperors Diocletian and Maximian as part of the Tetrarchy. The rarity of information makes it difficult to establish his family origins, political affiliations, or subsequent career. His appearance in the Fasti Consulares is the primary source of information regarding his existence.
