USS Peoria (LST-1183)

The USS Peoria (LST-1183) was a Newport-class tank landing ship (LST) of the United States Navy. Laid down on February 2, 1968, by National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, San Diego, California, she was launched on October 18, 1969, and commissioned on August 22, 1970.

The USS Peoria served primarily in the Pacific Fleet, participating in numerous exercises and deployments throughout her career. These included support for amphibious operations, transportation of personnel and equipment, and humanitarian aid missions. She was capable of beaching and unloading tanks, vehicles, and other cargo directly onto a shore.

The ship's dimensions were significant, reflecting her role as a large transport vessel. She featured a large tank deck and bow doors for efficient offloading.

USS Peoria (LST-1183) was decommissioned on December 15, 1994, and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on the same day. She was later transferred to Taiwan, where she served as ROCS Chung Hai (LST-232).
