M-Beat
M-Beat was a British drum and bass act formed in the early 1990s. Primarily the project of Mark Ryder, M-Beat is best known for its fusion of jungle and ragga influences, contributing significantly to the development of the early jungle sound. Ryder worked with various vocalists and collaborators throughout M-Beat's history.
M-Beat's early releases appeared on the Renk Records label, helping to establish their distinct sound. A defining characteristic of their music was the incorporation of reggae samples and vocals, often featuring artists from the Jamaican music scene. This combination of fast-paced breakbeats and Jamaican influences became a hallmark of the early jungle genre.
One of M-Beat's most successful tracks was "Incredible," featuring General Levy. Released in 1994, the track reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and became a defining anthem of the jungle/drum and bass scene. Its widespread popularity helped to bring jungle music into the mainstream. However, the track also generated controversy due to the lyrical content and associated music video, leading to a BBC ban.
Following the success of "Incredible," M-Beat continued to release music, though perhaps not reaching the same level of commercial success. The group remained influential in the jungle and drum and bass community, contributing to the evolution of the genre through the late 1990s. The legacy of M-Beat resides in their pioneering blend of reggae and electronic music, and their contribution to the formation of the jungle sound.
