Astrakhan electoral district (Russian Constituent Assembly election, 1917)
The Astrakhan electoral district was one of the 79 electoral districts established in November 1917 to elect delegates to the Russian Constituent Assembly. The electoral district covered the territory of the Astrakhan Governorate.
The election in Astrakhan produced the following results: The Socialist-Revolutionary Party (SRs) won a plurality of the votes cast, securing approximately 40% of the vote. The Constitutional Democrats (Kadets) came in second place with roughly 20%. Various other parties, including Mensheviks and Bolsheviks, received smaller portions of the vote. The elected delegates generally reflected the diverse ethnic and social makeup of the region, though the SRs' focus on agrarian issues resonated strongly within the rural population.
The relatively strong showing of the Kadets in Astrakhan contrasted with their generally weaker performance in other regions, suggesting a stronger presence of the educated professional classes and landowners within the governorate. The elections, though ultimately annulled along with the rest of the Constituent Assembly results, provide valuable insight into the political landscape of Astrakhan in the immediate aftermath of the October Revolution.
