John Cornforth (historian)
John Cornforth (1937 – 2004) was a British architectural historian and writer, primarily known for his expertise on English country houses and their contents. He made significant contributions to the understanding of the social, economic, and aesthetic context of these buildings, going beyond purely architectural analysis to consider the lives of the families who inhabited them and the evolution of their collections.
Cornforth studied history at Oxford University. He joined Country Life magazine in 1961 and remained a key figure there for over four decades, serving as architectural editor and later as architectural consultant. His writing in Country Life was influential in shaping public appreciation for the history and preservation of historic houses.
