Otogi Zoshi (TV series)

Otogi Zoshi is a 26-episode Japanese anime television series produced by Production I.G and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima. It aired on Nippon Television from July 6, 2004, to January 25, 2005. The series is loosely based on the Otogizōshi, a collection of Japanese fairy tales and folklore from the Muromachi period.

The story is divided into two distinct arcs: the Kyoto Arc (episodes 1-13) and the Tokyo Arc (episodes 14-26). The Kyoto Arc is set in the Heian period and follows Minamoto no Hikaru, the younger sister of Minamoto no Yorimitsu, as she is tasked by her ailing brother to recover the "Five Treasures" which are said to cure his illness and bring peace to the land. These treasures are a sword, a jewel, a bowl, a flute, and a helmet. Hikaru embarks on a quest accompanied by four retainers: Watanabe no Tsuna, Urabe no Suetake, Sakata no Kintoki, and Usui Sadamitsu.

The Tokyo Arc shifts the setting to 1920s Tokyo. The characters from the Heian period are reincarnated and must once again confront the forces of darkness. This arc delves into themes of modernization, societal change, and the enduring power of tradition. The modern Hikaru retains memories of her past life and must unite her companions to prevent a catastrophic event.

The anime is known for its stylish character designs by Chika Umino, its incorporation of Japanese mythology, and its blending of historical and fantastical elements. The series explores themes of duty, loyalty, sacrifice, and the cyclical nature of history. Its narrative structure, which alternates between the ancient and modern worlds, is a notable characteristic.
