9th Brigade (New Zealand)

The 9th Brigade was a formation of the New Zealand Army that served during the Second World War. It was initially formed in late 1941 as part of the 3rd New Zealand Division, intended for service in the Pacific theatre. The brigade's composition varied over time, but typically included infantry battalions, support units such as artillery, engineers, and signals, and medical detachments.

The 9th Brigade saw action in the Solomon Islands campaign, specifically in the fighting on Guadalcanal and the Treasury Islands. During these campaigns, it participated in offensive operations against Japanese forces. The brigade endured challenging conditions, including heavy combat, tropical diseases, and difficult terrain.

Following its service in the Pacific, the 3rd New Zealand Division, and therefore the 9th Brigade, was disbanded in 1944 due to manpower shortages in New Zealand's economy and the changing strategic situation in the Pacific. Many of its personnel were redeployed to other units.
