Cynorkis
Cynorkis is a genus of orchids native to Madagascar and other islands in the western Indian Ocean, including the Comoros, Réunion, and Mauritius. The genus is characterized by terrestrial or lithophytic growth habits, often with tuberous roots. The flowers of Cynorkis are generally small and non-resupinate (the labellum is positioned at the top), displaying a variety of colors from white and green to pink and purple.
Cynorkis orchids are found in diverse habitats ranging from rainforests and woodlands to grasslands and rocky outcrops. Their distribution is largely confined to areas with seasonal rainfall. Many species are adapted to specific ecological niches, contributing to the high levels of endemism observed within the genus, particularly in Madagascar.
Taxonomically, Cynorkis belongs to the tribe Orchideae within the subfamily Orchidoideae. The genus has undergone several taxonomic revisions, leading to changes in the circumscription and relationships of its constituent species.
Conservation concerns exist for numerous Cynorkis species due to habitat loss from deforestation, agriculture, and mining, as well as over-collection for horticultural purposes. Some species are listed under conservation programs or are subject to monitoring efforts.
