Cracticus

Cracticus is a genus of birds in the family Artamidae, commonly known as currawongs. These are medium to large passerine birds native to Australia, New Guinea, and surrounding islands.

Characteristics:

Currawongs are characterized by their striking black and white (or occasionally gray) plumage, heavy bills, and distinctive calls, often described as ringing or carolling. They are omnivorous birds, feeding on a variety of insects, fruits, small animals, and occasionally carrion. They are generally bold and inquisitive birds, often found in suburban and urban areas.

Species:

The genus Cracticus includes the following species:

  • Cracticus torquatus - Grey Currawong
  • Cracticus argenteogularis - Silver-backed Butcherbird (formerly included in Cracticus)
  • Cracticus mentalis - Black-backed Butcherbird (formerly included in Cracticus)
  • Cracticus nigrogularis - Pied Butcherbird (formerly included in Cracticus)
  • Cracticus tibicen - Australian Magpie (formerly included in Gymnorhina)

Taxonomy:

The taxonomy of Cracticus and related genera like Gymnorhina and Strepera has been subject to revision based on molecular and morphological evidence. Traditionally, birds now classified as butcherbirds were included within Cracticus, but have since been reclassified into other genera. The Australian Magpie, formerly Gymnorhina tibicen, has also been reclassified into the Cracticus genus.
