Avantage
Avantage (French, meaning "advantage") is a term used in tennis scoring. It signifies that one player has won the first point after deuce, placing them one point away from winning the game.
In detail:
- Deuce: A score of 40-40.
- Avantage In: If the server wins the point after deuce, they have "Avantage In." They win the game if they win the next point.
- Avantage Out: If the receiver wins the point after deuce, they have "Avantage Out." They win the game if they win the next point.
- Returning to Deuce: If the player without the advantage wins the next point, the score returns to deuce. The game then continues with alternating advantages until one player wins a point while holding the advantage.
The term "advantage" is its direct English translation, and is sometimes used in English-speaking countries, but the French term "Avantage" is also commonly used, particularly at higher levels of play. The scoring system aims to ensure a clear two-point lead is established before a game is won after reaching deuce.
