Anisodine

Anisodine is a tropane alkaloid with anticholinergic and antispasmodic properties. It is derived from plants of the Solanaceae family, particularly those belonging to the Datura and Scopolia genera. It is structurally similar to atropine and scopolamine, but with a different pharmacological profile.

Anisodine acts as a muscarinic receptor antagonist, blocking the action of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors. This leads to a reduction in parasympathetic nervous system activity. Its effects include dilation of pupils (mydriasis), decreased salivation, reduced gastrointestinal motility, and increased heart rate.

Anisodine has been used therapeutically in certain countries, primarily in China, for the treatment of conditions such as septic shock, acute microcirculatory disturbance, and organophosphate poisoning. It is believed to improve microcirculation and reduce inflammation in these conditions.

Its use is associated with potential side effects similar to other anticholinergics, including dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, constipation, and tachycardia. Central nervous system effects such as confusion, hallucinations, and delirium can also occur, especially at higher doses.

The availability and regulation of anisodine vary across different countries.
