Ħal Far
Ħal Far is an industrial estate and former airfield located in the south of Malta, near Birżebbuġa. It has a long and varied history, serving initially as a Royal Air Force (RAF) airfield and later transitioning into a significant industrial area.
History:
Originally established as RAF Hal Far in the 1920s, it played a crucial role during World War II, becoming a vital base for defending Malta. The airfield suffered extensive damage from Axis bombing raids. After the war, the RAF maintained a presence until the late 1960s. The base was then transferred to the Maltese government.
Post-RAF Era:
Following the departure of the RAF, Ħal Far was redeveloped as an industrial estate. A number of factories and businesses were established, contributing to Malta's growing economy. The site has also been used for various other purposes, including a refugee reception center.
Present Day:
Today, Ħal Far remains a key industrial area in Malta. It houses a diverse range of industries and continues to be a site of significant economic activity. Its legacy as a former RAF base is still evident, with some remnants of the airfield infrastructure still visible. The area has also been subject to ongoing discussions regarding its future development and environmental impact.
