History of Blackpool F.C. (1962–present)
This article details the history of Blackpool Football Club from 1962 to the present day. The period encompasses significant changes in the club's fortunes, including relegations, promotions, financial difficulties, and ultimately, a brief return to the Premier League.
Following the departure of manager Ron Suart in 1967, Blackpool experienced a period of instability, cycling through several managers in quick succession. This contributed to a decline in playing standards and ultimately led to relegation from the First Division in 1967.
The 1970s saw Blackpool fluctuate between the Second and Third Divisions, never establishing themselves for long in either league. Despite some promising cup runs, consistent league performance remained elusive. Financial constraints became increasingly apparent during this decade.
The 1980s were a particularly bleak period for Blackpool. The club suffered further relegations, eventually finding themselves in the Fourth Division for the first time in their history. Bloomfield Road fell into disrepair, reflecting the club's on-field and off-field struggles. Attendances dwindled significantly.
A turning point came in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Under the management of Jimmy Mullen, Blackpool secured promotion back to the Third Division (later League One). This provided a much-needed boost to morale and finances.
The club continued to consolidate their position in the lower leagues throughout the 1990s. They enjoyed some success in cup competitions, reaching the final of the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1996.
The early 2000s saw Blackpool under the stewardship of Steve McMahon. They achieved promotion to League One in 2001 via the play-offs, marking a period of renewed optimism among supporters.
The appointment of Simon Grayson as manager in 2008 proved pivotal. In 2010, Blackpool achieved the seemingly impossible, securing promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. This was their first time in the top flight for almost 40 years.
Blackpool's Premier League adventure in the 2010-11 season, under manager Ian Holloway (Grayson having moved to Leeds), was characterized by an attacking style of play. However, they were ultimately relegated back to the Championship after a single season.
Following relegation, Blackpool experienced a rapid decline. Financial problems resurfaced, and the club went through a series of managerial changes. They suffered further relegations, eventually finding themselves back in League Two.
In 2017, under the ownership of Simon Sadler, Blackpool began a rebuilding process. They secured promotion back to League One in 2017 and then, under manager Neil Critchley, achieved promotion to the Championship in 2021.
Blackpool were relegated back to League One at the end of the 2022-23 season. The club continues to strive for stability and success, aiming to rebuild and return to the Championship.
