Wild Tales (film)

Wild Tales (Spanish: Relatos salvajes) is a 2014 Argentine-Spanish black comedy anthology film written and directed by Damián Szifron. It comprises six standalone shorts that explore themes of revenge, anger, and the loss of control in modern society.

The film was a critical and commercial success, receiving widespread acclaim for its dark humor, sharp social commentary, and inventive storytelling. It was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards.

Each of the six segments presents a unique narrative, interconnected by their shared exploration of human nature pushed to its breaking point. The stories are characterized by sudden, often violent, outbursts of rage and retribution in response to perceived injustices or frustrations. They often escalate from seemingly mundane situations into absurd and darkly humorous scenarios.

The segments, typically titled in English for international distribution, are:

  • "Pasternak": A plane flight where passengers discover they all have a common connection to a man named Gabriel Pasternak.
  • "Las Ratas" ("The Rats"): A waitress confronts a ruthless loan shark who ruined her family.
  • "El más fuerte" ("The Strongest"): A road rage incident between two drivers escalates into a brutal confrontation.
  • "Bombita" ("Little Bomb"): A demolition expert faces bureaucratic absurdity and mounting frustration.
  • "La Propuesta" ("The Proposal"): A wealthy family attempts to cover up a hit-and-run accident involving their son.
  • "Hasta que la muerte nos separe" ("'Til Death Do Us Part"): A wedding celebration descends into chaos as the bride discovers her husband's infidelity.

Wild Tales is considered a significant film in contemporary Argentine cinema and a notable example of black comedy filmmaking.
