Egba Ake
Egba Ake refers to a sub-group and historical division of the Yoruba people, primarily located in and around Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, in southwestern Nigeria. The Egba are one of the major divisions of the Yoruba, alongside the Ijebu, Oyo, Ife, Ijesha, and others. Ake specifically refers to the traditional seat of power of the Egba Alake, the paramount ruler of Egbaland. The Alake resides in Ake Palace in Abeokuta. The term "Egba Ake" can thus refer to both the people of Egba under the Alake and the geographical location of the Alake's palace and influence within Abeokuta. Historically, the Egba were formed from a collection of smaller settlements that coalesced in the 19th century following disruptions from inter-tribal wars. They established Abeokuta as a refuge and a new center of Egba power. The Egba are known for their independent spirit and strong cultural traditions.
