Vipava (river)
The Vipava is a river that flows through western Slovenia and northeastern Italy. It rises near the village of Vrhpolje in Slovenia, at the foot of Mount Javornik. From its source, it flows southeast through the Vipava Valley ( Vipavska dolina in Slovene), passing through the towns of Vipava and Ajdovščina.
After crossing the Slovenian-Italian border, the river flows through the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy, where it is known as the Vipacco. It eventually empties into the Isonzo (Soča) River near Savogna d'Isonzo (Slovenian: Sovodnje ob Soči).
The Vipava is approximately 49 kilometers (30 miles) long, with roughly 45 kilometers in Slovenia and 4 kilometers in Italy. It is an important water source for agriculture in the Vipava Valley, which is known for its viticulture and other agricultural production. The river's flow rate is variable and can fluctuate significantly depending on rainfall and seasonal changes. The Vipava Valley is also known for its unique microclimate, influenced by the river and its surrounding geography.
