United States Post Office (Cooper Station)

The United States Post Office (Cooper Station) is a historic post office branch located at 93 Fourth Avenue in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It is officially designated as the "United States Post Office – Cooper Station."

The building was designed in the Beaux-Arts style by architect James Riely Gordon and built between 1935 and 1937. Its design is characterized by its symmetrical facade, classical details, and the use of durable materials like granite and limestone. The interior features New Deal-era artwork, specifically a series of murals painted by Anton Refregier between 1939 and 1941. These murals depict the history of New York City, from its indigenous inhabitants to its industrial development.

Cooper Station serves the postal needs of a significant portion of the East Village and surrounding areas. Its name honors Peter Cooper, the 19th-century industrialist, inventor, and philanthropist who founded the nearby Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. The post office continues to operate as a functioning branch of the United States Postal Service.

The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, recognizing its architectural significance and the importance of its New Deal artwork. It stands as an example of a well-preserved and historically important public building within New York City.
