USS LSM(R)-198

USS LSM(R)-198 was a Landing Ship Medium (Rocket), designated LSM(R)-198, that served in the United States Navy during World War II. As an LSM(R), she was specifically outfitted to provide close fire support for amphibious landings with a heavy armament of 5-inch rockets.

LSM(R)-198 participated in numerous campaigns in the Pacific Theater. These included, but were not limited to, operations in the Philippines, such as the Battle of Leyte. She played a vital role in softening enemy defenses prior to and during troop landings. Her primary function was to saturate beachheads with rocket fire, suppressing enemy positions and providing cover for the advancing Marines and soldiers.

Like other LSM(R)s, LSM(R)-198 was a relatively small vessel, making her maneuverable in close proximity to shore. However, her light armor made her vulnerable to enemy fire. Despite the risks, these vessels were critical assets in amphibious warfare, providing firepower that artillery could not deliver as rapidly or as densely.

Following the conclusion of World War II, LSM(R)-198, like many of her sister ships, was likely decommissioned and either scrapped or sold off for other uses. Detailed records of her specific postwar fate may vary.
