USS Boxer (CV-21)

The USS Boxer (CV-21) was an Essex-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, she saw extensive service during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, as well as playing a significant role in early Cold War operations and humanitarian missions.

After her commissioning on April 16, 1945, the Boxer initially participated in Operation Magic Carpet, the post-World War II repatriation of U.S. troops from the Pacific theater. In 1950, with the outbreak of the Korean War, the Boxer was quickly deployed to the region, becoming one of the primary aircraft carriers providing air support for United Nations forces. She conducted hundreds of sorties, launching aircraft that attacked North Korean targets and provided close air support for ground troops.

During the 1950s, the Boxer underwent conversion to an anti-submarine warfare support carrier (CVS-21), reflecting the changing nature of naval warfare. In this role, she carried specialized aircraft and equipment designed to detect and counter Soviet submarines.

In the 1960s, the Boxer returned to service as an amphibious assault ship (LPH-4). She was heavily involved in the Vietnam War, transporting Marine Corps units and equipment to and from the combat zone. In addition, the Boxer participated in numerous humanitarian operations, including disaster relief efforts following earthquakes and hurricanes.

The USS Boxer was decommissioned in 1969 and scrapped in 1971, marking the end of a distinguished career that spanned over two decades and three major conflicts. She received numerous battle stars for her service.
