Cape Howe

Cape Howe is a prominent headland located in southeastern Australia, marking the southeasternmost point of the mainland state of New South Wales. It forms the border between New South Wales and Victoria.

Geography

The cape is characterized by rugged coastal scenery, including granite cliffs and heathland vegetation. It is situated within Croajingolong National Park in Victoria to the west and Nadgee Nature Reserve in New South Wales to the north. The Tasman Sea lies to its east. The area is subject to strong winds and swells.

History

Cape Howe was named by Captain James Cook during his voyage of discovery in 1770. He named it after Admiral Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe. The cape has historically been a significant landmark for maritime navigation.

Ecology

The surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, supporting a variety of flora and fauna. Seabirds are common in the region, and whales migrate past the cape during their seasonal movements. The terrestrial vegetation is adapted to the harsh coastal environment.

Access and Recreation

Cape Howe is relatively remote, with limited road access. It can be reached by hiking trails within the national parks and nature reserves. Recreational activities include hiking, birdwatching, and whale watching. Camping is available in designated areas within the parks.
