Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption (Lancaster, Ohio)
The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption is a Roman Catholic church located in Lancaster, Ohio. It holds the distinction of being one of the oldest Catholic churches in the state. Originally established as a log cabin church in 1818, serving a small but growing Catholic population in the region, it evolved through several iterations before the current building was constructed.
The cornerstone for the present church structure was laid in 1863, and the completed church was dedicated in 1864. The architectural style is predominantly Gothic Revival, characterized by its pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and stained-glass windows. These windows depict various biblical scenes and figures of saints. The interior also features notable statuary, including those of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the patron saint of the church, and other significant religious figures.
The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption has played a significant role in the Catholic community of Lancaster and the surrounding areas for nearly two centuries. It has been a center for religious worship, education, and community outreach. In 2022, Pope Francis elevated St. Mary Church to the status of a minor basilica.
