Green (Martian crater)
Green is a crater on Mars, located in the Lunae Palus quadrangle at 18.7° N and 294.7° W. It measures 16 kilometers in diameter and was named after American astronomer, George Green (1841-1904).
Craters on Mars are generally named after scientists and writers and towns of under 100,000 inhabitants on Earth. The naming convention for Martian craters follows guidelines established by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
Green crater is of interest to scientists due to its well-defined rim and relatively pristine appearance, suggesting it is a relatively young impact crater. Studying the ejecta blanket surrounding the crater, as well as the features within the crater itself, can provide insights into the composition of the Martian surface and subsurface. The crater's location in the Lunae Palus region also places it within a geologically diverse area, allowing for comparisons with other landforms and features in the vicinity.
