Maputo

Maputo is the capital and largest city of Mozambique, located on the country's southern coast. It serves as a major port city on the Indian Ocean, playing a crucial role in the country's economy and international trade.

History:

Maputo's origins can be traced back to a Portuguese settlement established in the late 18th century. Initially known as Lourenço Marques, named after a Portuguese trader who explored the area in 1544, the settlement grew in importance as a trading post and later as a strategic port. In 1898, Lourenço Marques replaced Ilha de Moçambique as the capital of Portuguese East Africa. The city experienced significant development during the colonial period, becoming a major center for trade and administration. Following Mozambique's independence in 1975, the city was renamed Maputo. The name derives from a local chieftain, Maputsu I, who ruled the area centuries earlier.
