Church of the Advent (Boston)

The Church of the Advent is an Anglo-Catholic parish church located in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1844, it is a prominent example of Gothic Revival architecture in the United States and is known for its traditional liturgical practices and choral music program.

The church was established by a group of Episcopalians seeking a more ritualistic and sacramental style of worship than was common in the Diocese of Massachusetts at the time. They aimed to revive aspects of Catholic tradition within the Anglican Communion, adhering to the principles of the Oxford Movement.

The building itself, consecrated in 1883, was designed by architect John H. Sturgis and features a cruciform plan, a soaring nave, stained glass windows, and an elaborate High Altar. Its architecture is often cited as one of the finest expressions of Gothic Revival in the city.

The Church of the Advent maintains a strong emphasis on traditional Anglican liturgy, including the use of incense, vestments, and Gregorian chant. The parish also boasts a renowned choir that performs a wide range of sacred music.
