German submarine U-70 (1940)
U-70 was a Type VIIB U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. She was laid down on 3 May 1939 at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard in Bremen-Vegesack as yard number 1, launched on 14 March 1940, and commissioned on 25 April 1940 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Joachim Matz.
U-70 conducted five war patrols. Her first patrol began on 15 June 1940, departing Kiel and patrolling in the North Sea and the waters west of Ireland. She successfully sank one ship, the British freighter Empire Toucan, on 24 June 1940. The second patrol, from 13 July to 16 August 1940, also targeted shipping west of Ireland and resulted in the sinking of three vessels: the British freighter Athelcrest, the Greek freighter Anadara, and the British freighter Sea Glory. Her third patrol, lasting from 7 September to 28 September 1940, did not result in any sinkings.
U-70's fourth patrol, from 26 October to 22 November 1940, resulted in the sinking of the British auxiliary patrol vessel HMS Argyll. The submarine's fifth and final patrol commenced on 21 February 1941 from Lorient, France. On 7 March 1941, U-70 was sunk in the North Atlantic, south of Iceland, by depth charges from the British corvette HMS Camellia and the destroyer HMS Whirlwind. Twenty members of her crew were killed, while 25 survived and were taken as prisoners of war. The sinking occurred at position 60°15′N 16°20′W.
