Marco Formentini (politician)
Marco Formentini (2 May 1930 – 2 January 2005) was an Italian politician, notable for serving as the mayor of Milan from 1993 to 1997.
Formentini was born in La Spezia. He was a prominent member of the League Lombardy (Lega Lombarda), later becoming part of Lega Nord (Northern League). His election as mayor of Milan in 1993 marked a significant shift in the city's political landscape, breaking decades of dominance by the Christian Democrats and Socialists.
During his tenure as mayor, Formentini focused on issues such as urban renewal, public safety, and combating corruption. He also oversaw preparations for the celebration of Milan's centennial as a unified city. His administration was marked by both successes and controversies, including debates over traffic management and public spending.
After leaving office as mayor, Formentini continued to be active in politics. He served as a Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004, representing the Northern League. He was involved in various parliamentary committees and contributed to discussions on European regional policy and urban development.
Formentini died in Milan in 2005. He is remembered for his role in transforming Milan's political landscape and for his contributions to the Northern League.
