In Transit (musical)

In Transit is a 2016 a cappella musical, with book, music, and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan, and Sara Wordsworth. It holds the distinction of being the first completely a cappella musical to run on Broadway.

The show follows the interwoven lives of a group of New Yorkers navigating love, careers, and the challenges of urban life, all while utilizing the sounds and rhythms of the city as its musical accompaniment. The score features contemporary pop, R&B, and jazz influences, all performed without traditional instruments.

The story primarily takes place in and around the New York City subway system. The characters include an aspiring actress, a struggling musician, a finance professional wrestling with his sexuality, and a disillusioned wedding singer, among others. Their individual stories explore themes of ambition, connection, and the search for belonging.

In Transit began its Off-Broadway run in 2010 at the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF), winning the award for Outstanding Musical. It had subsequent productions at regional theaters before making its Broadway debut at the Circle in the Square Theatre in December 2016. While the production received mixed reviews, it was praised for its innovative use of a cappella and the talented cast. The Broadway run closed in April 2017.
