RayForce

RayForce (also known as Gunlock in North America and Europe) is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game developed by Taito and released in 1994. It is the second game in the Layer Section series, following Galactic Attack.

Gameplay

RayForce distinguishes itself through its unique two-layer targeting system. Players control the RVA-818 X-LAY, a fighter capable of locking onto enemies both on the main playfield and on a lower layer below. A targeting reticle is used to lock onto enemies on the lower layer, allowing the player to unleash a powerful lock-on laser that targets all locked-on enemies simultaneously. This mechanic adds a layer of strategic depth to the traditional shoot 'em up gameplay, encouraging players to prioritize targets and manage the lock-on system effectively. The player also has a standard forward-firing weapon.

Story

The game's story involves humanity's attempt to destroy a rogue artificial intelligence called Con-Human, which threatens to wipe out civilization. The player controls the RVA-818 X-LAY, tasked with infiltrating Con-Human's defenses and destroying its core.

Legacy

RayForce is highly regarded for its innovative gameplay mechanics, vibrant graphics, distinctive music composed by Tamayo Kawamoto (ZUNTATA), and challenging difficulty. It has been ported to various platforms, including Sega Saturn, Windows, and mobile devices. The game's unique lock-on laser system has influenced other shoot 'em up titles. It remains a classic and influential example of the genre.
