Alan Lewis (rugby union and cricket)
Alan Lewis (born 27 September 1964) is a former Irish international rugby union player and first-class cricketer. He is best known for his career as a rugby union referee, officiating at the highest levels of the game, including Rugby World Cups.
Lewis played rugby union as a scrum-half for Ireland, earning three caps between 1987 and 1988. Prior to focusing on rugby, he also played cricket for Leinster and Ireland, achieving first-class status. His cricket career was ultimately curtailed by his increasing involvement in rugby.
Following his playing career, Lewis became a rugby union referee. He rose quickly through the ranks, becoming a regular on the international circuit. He refereed at the 2003, 2007, and 2011 Rugby World Cups. He also officiated in numerous Six Nations Championships, Tri-Nations Series (later The Rugby Championship), and Heineken Cup matches. He was considered one of the leading referees in the world during his active officiating years.
Since retiring from refereeing, Lewis has remained involved in rugby, often as a citing commissioner or referee coach.
