Theraps (Xenakis)

Theraps is a composition for solo contrabass written in 1975 by the Greek composer Iannis Xenakis. The piece is known for its extreme technical demands on the performer and its exploration of the sonic possibilities of the contrabass.

Theraps is characterized by its use of extended techniques, including rapid pizzicato, col legno (striking the strings with the wood of the bow), sul ponticello (bowing near the bridge), and glissandi. Xenakis also utilizes microtones and unconventional tunings, pushing the instrument and the performer to their limits. The piece is highly virtuosic and requires exceptional control and stamina.

The title, "Theraps," is derived from the Greek word "therapeuein," meaning "to treat" or "to cure." Xenakis often used titles that referenced Greek language and culture. The connection between the title and the music itself is open to interpretation, but some scholars suggest that it reflects the composer's intention to explore the healing or transformative power of sound through the intensely physical and demanding act of performance.
