The Cost of Living (Lost)

"The Cost of Living" is the fifth episode of the third season of the American television drama series Lost. It originally aired on October 25, 2006, on ABC. The episode focuses primarily on the character of Mr. Eko, delving into his backstory and ultimately depicting his death.

The episode provides flashbacks into Mr. Eko's life in Nigeria, showing his rise to power within his village by becoming involved in a local gang. These flashbacks reveal the circumstances that led him to impersonate his younger brother, Yemi, a priest, and how he ended up on Oceanic Flight 815.

On the island, Mr. Eko encounters members of "The Others," the island's enigmatic inhabitants. He confronts them regarding his actions in the past, specifically relating to Yemi's death. This confrontation culminates in a violent exchange, during which Mr. Eko refuses to repent for his life choices, asserting that he did what he had to do to survive and protect his brother. He is ultimately killed by the smoke monster, later revealed to be the Man in Black.

"The Cost of Living" is notable for being the final episode featuring Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as a series regular. The episode explores themes of redemption, faith, and the consequences of one's actions. The title itself reflects the price Mr. Eko ultimately pays for his decisions, both morally and physically.
