Yang Hong (Shu Han)

Yang Hong (楊洪) (died 228 CE), courtesy name Jishan (季山), was an official who served in the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period of China.

Service Under Liu Zhang:

Originally from Wuyang County, Ba Commandery (巴郡武陽縣), which is present-day Pengshan District, Sichuan, Yang Hong began his career serving under Liu Zhang, the Governor of Yi Province (益州), which covered present-day Sichuan and Chongqing. He held the position of Commandant of Pi County (郫縣). While serving in this post, he recognized the growing ambition and influence of Liu Bei, who had been invited into Yi Province by Liu Zhang as an ally. Concerned about Liu Bei's potential takeover, Yang Hong advised Liu Zhang to be wary. However, Liu Zhang did not heed his advice.

Service Under Liu Bei:

After Liu Bei seized Yi Province from Liu Zhang in 214 CE, Yang Hong submitted to Liu Bei. Impressed by Yang Hong's abilities and loyalty, Liu Bei appointed him as a subordinate official. Yang Hong quickly rose through the ranks due to his capable administration and strategic insights.

Service Under Liu Shan:

Following Liu Bei's death in 223 CE and the ascension of Liu Shan to the throne, Yang Hong continued to serve in the Shu Han government. He held the position of Chief Clerk (主簿) and later served as a Consultant (議郎). He was known for his forthright advice and his dedication to the state.

Role During Zhuge Liang's Northern Expeditions:

Yang Hong played a crucial role during Zhuge Liang's Northern Expeditions against the state of Cao Wei. He was often consulted on logistical matters and offered advice on military strategies. He was responsible for managing the transportation of supplies and resources to the front lines, ensuring that Zhuge Liang's armies were adequately supported.

Death and Legacy:

Yang Hong died in 228 CE. He was remembered as a loyal and capable official who contributed significantly to the stability and administration of Shu Han. His advice and logistical support were valuable assets to both Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang. His actions demonstrated his dedication to the Shu Han cause and his ability to adapt to changing political landscapes.
