Taraban

Taraban is a Polish and Ukrainian word referring to a large, single-headed frame drum, typically used in folk music, particularly in mountainous regions. It is often made from a hollowed-out log or a wooden frame covered with animal hide (usually goat or sheep). The drum is usually played with a beater or stick, producing a deep, resonant sound. Historically, the taraban served not only as a musical instrument but also as a means of communication, particularly for signaling across distances in mountainous terrain. It is an integral part of folk ensembles in the Carpathian regions and plays a significant role in traditional celebrations and rituals. The term may also refer more generally to any large frame drum of similar construction and function in the same geographical area.
