Sulak (river)
The Sulak is a major river in Dagestan, Russia. Formed by the confluence of the Avarskoe Koisu and Andijskoe Koisu rivers in the Dagestan mountains, the Sulak flows generally north through a series of deep canyons and eventually empties into the Caspian Sea.
The river is an important source of hydroelectric power, with several large dams and power plants located along its course, including the Chirkey Dam, one of the highest arch dams in Russia. These dams also create significant reservoirs.
The Sulak River basin is known for its diverse flora and fauna, as well as its dramatic landscapes. The river is also used for irrigation in the surrounding agricultural areas. The Sulak canyon, formed by the river, is one of the deepest canyons in the world, rivaling the Grand Canyon in depth in certain sections.
