Steppin' Out (Tony Bennett album)
Steppin' Out is a studio album by Tony Bennett, released in 1993. The album is a tribute to the music of Fred Astaire. Bennett's goal with Steppin' Out was to honor Astaire as both a dancer and a songwriter/interpreter of song. The album features a collection of songs either made famous by Astaire or written by him, presented in Bennett's signature vocal style.
The album features arrangements by Ralph Sharon, Bennett's longtime musical director and pianist. The instrumentation is typically a small jazz ensemble, allowing Bennett's vocals to remain the focus. Critical reception of Steppin' Out was generally positive, with reviewers praising Bennett's interpretation of the classic material and the quality of the arrangements. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance in 1994. It helped to further solidify Bennett's career resurgence in the 1990s, introducing his interpretations of the Great American Songbook to a new audience. Tracks on the album include classics like "Steppin' Out With My Baby," "I Won't Dance," and "Cheek to Cheek."
