Baaltars
Baaltars were a small, possibly extinct, ethno-linguistic group residing in the region historically known as Livonia (present-day Latvia and Estonia). Information regarding the Baaltars is scarce and largely reliant on indirect historical accounts and linguistic analysis. They are primarily noted for their possible connection to the Baltic linguistic family, suggested by toponymic studies and surviving fragmentary vocabulary possibly attributed to them. Some scholars hypothesize that the Baaltars were an earlier, pre-Latvian or pre-Estonian, Baltic group who were eventually assimilated by other surrounding populations. Their exact geographic distribution and cultural characteristics remain largely unknown. The name "Baaltars" itself is of uncertain origin, and its etymological roots are subject to scholarly debate. The existence of the Baaltars as a distinct group is not universally accepted within the academic community, with some suggesting they were simply a subgroup within a larger Baltic tribe or a misidentification based on limited historical records.
