Couchet

A couchet is an obsolete term for a small, low sofa or daybed. Typically without a back or with a very low back, couchets were designed for reclining or lounging. The term was primarily used in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in France, to describe a piece of furniture intended for comfortable rest during the daytime. Couchets often featured elaborate upholstery and ornamental legs. Though similar to a chaise lounge, couchets tended to be shorter and less contoured. The word is derived from the French coucher, meaning "to lie down." The couchet faded from common usage as other forms of reclining furniture, like the chaise lounge and the fainting couch, became more prevalent.
