Old World (video game)
Old World is a historical 4X turn-based strategy video game developed by Mohawk Games, founded by Soren Johnson, lead designer of Civilization IV. It was originally released in early access on the Epic Games Store in May 2020 and officially released on July 1, 2021. A Steam release followed in May 2022.
Gameplay:
Old World distinguishes itself from other 4X games through its focus on character-driven gameplay and dynasty management. Players lead a civilization through multiple generations, with the success of the nation heavily influenced by the personalities, skills, and relationships of its rulers, heirs, and family members. Events and decisions are often framed within a narrative context, impacting character traits, relationships, and the overall stability of the realm.
Key gameplay features include:
- Dynasty Management: The game tracks the ruling family and their descendants, with marriages, births, and deaths shaping the line of succession. The ruler's personality and abilities directly affect the nation's performance.
- Character-Driven Events: Events based on historical records and designed to offer dynamic challenges and opportunities based on the player's actions and the characteristics of their family members.
- Limited Orders: Unlike traditional 4X games, Old World restricts the number of orders players can issue per turn. This scarcity forces players to prioritize actions and carefully manage their resources.
- Legitimacy System: The legitimacy of the ruler impacts the stability of the empire. High legitimacy translates to loyalty and productivity, while low legitimacy can lead to rebellions and instability.
- Historical Accuracy: The game strives for historical accuracy in its depiction of ancient civilizations, technologies, and events, although liberties are taken for gameplay purposes.
- Unique Victory Conditions: Victory can be achieved through various means, including military conquest, cultural dominance, technological advancement, and dynastic prestige.
Civilizations:
The game features a variety of ancient civilizations, each with unique units, strengths, and weaknesses. Examples include:
- Assyria
- Babylon
- Carthage
- Egypt
- Greece
- Israel
- Persia
- Rome
Expansions and DLC:
Since its release, Old World has received several expansions and downloadable content packs that add new civilizations, scenarios, and gameplay mechanics.
Reception:
Old World has generally been well-received by critics, who have praised its innovative gameplay mechanics, historical accuracy, and engaging character-driven narratives. The limited orders system and dynasty management features are often cited as key differentiators that set it apart from other 4X games. Some criticism has been directed towards the complexity of the game and its steep learning curve.
