Sortilège (band)
Sortilège is a French heavy metal band formed in 1981. They are considered pioneers of the French heavy metal scene and are known for their epic and melodic sound, often incorporating elements of medieval fantasy into their lyrics and overall aesthetic.
The band's original lineup consisted of Christian "Zouille" Augustin (vocals), Stéphane Dumont (guitar), Didier Demajean (guitar), Daniel Lapp (bass), and Jean-Philippe Gostiaux (drums). Sortilège quickly gained popularity in France and beyond, releasing their self-titled debut EP in 1982 and their first full-length album, Métamorphose, in 1984. Métamorphose became a seminal album in French heavy metal.
In 1986, they released Larmes de Héros. Following that album, the band dissolved.
Sortilège reformed in 2019 with Zouille Augustin as the only original member. The reformed band subsequently released a new album, Apocalypso, in 2021, followed by a re-recording of their classic material entitled Phoenix in 2023.
Sortilège's lyrical themes often revolve around mythology, fantasy, and historical events, sung in French on their early recordings, contributing to their distinct identity. They are noted for their energetic live performances and have toured extensively throughout Europe. They remain influential in the French and international heavy metal community.
