John McDougall (VC)

John McDougall (VC) was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

McDougall was born in Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scotland. He was 24 years old, and a Private in the Scots Guards, British Army during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 7 June 1855 at Sebastopol, Crimea, Private McDougall, together with Private Joseph Bradshaw, volunteered to bring in, under very heavy fire, a sergeant of the Scots Guards who was severely wounded. They succeeded in doing so, although they were obliged to leave him for a time in order to obtain help.

He later achieved the rank of Colour-Sergeant.

His Victoria Cross is held at the Scots Guards RHQ, Wellington Barracks, London.
