WQXR-FM
WQXR-FM is a commercial classical music radio station licensed to Newark, New Jersey and serving the New York City metropolitan area. It is owned by New York Public Radio, which also operates WNYC (AM) and WNYC-FM. WQXR-FM broadcasts on the FM band at 105.9 MHz. Its studios are located in Manhattan, and its transmitter is located at the Empire State Building.
WQXR's programming focuses on classical music, including orchestral works, chamber music, opera, and vocal performances. The station also features interviews with musicians, conductors, and composers, as well as news and features related to the classical music world.
The station has a long history, dating back to 1936 when it was established as experimental FM station W2XR. It became WQXR-FM in 1948. For many years, WQXR was owned by The New York Times Company along with sister station WQXR (AM). In 2009, The New York Times Company sold WQXR-FM to New York Public Radio in a three-way transaction that resulted in Univision Radio acquiring WQXR (AM) and moving its Spanish-language programming to that frequency. This allowed WQXR-FM to maintain its classical music format and continue serving its audience.
