Sleepwalkers (1992 film)

Sleepwalkers is a 1992 American horror film directed by Mick Garris and written by Stephen King. The film stars Brian Krause, Mädchen Amick, and Alice Krige. It tells the story of two shape-shifting creatures, mother and son, who are "sleepwalkers," nomadic energy vampires who feed on the life force of virgin women.

Plot:

Charles Brady (Krause) and his mother, Mary (Krige), arrive in a small Indiana town seeking to feed. They are "sleepwalkers," cat-like humanoid creatures who can transform their appearance. They must keep their true nature a secret and regularly feed on the life force of virgin women to survive. Charles sets his sights on Tanya Robertson (Amick), a local high school student, using his charm and seemingly gentle nature to get close to her. As Charles attempts to seduce and then attack Tanya, she becomes suspicious and, with the help of her family cat, Clovis, discovers the horrifying truth about Charles and Mary. The film culminates in a showdown where Tanya and the town's cats, which are the sleepwalkers' natural enemies, fight to defeat the supernatural predators.

Cast:

  • Brian Krause as Charles Brady
  • Mädchen Amick as Tanya Robertson
  • Alice Krige as Mary Brady
  • Jim Haynie as Sheriff Ira
  • Cindy Pickett as Mrs. Robertson
  • Ron Perlman as Captain Soames
  • Glynis Johns as Amen

Stephen King also makes a cameo appearance as a cemetery caretaker.

Production:

Sleepwalkers was one of the first screenplays written specifically for the screen by Stephen King. Mick Garris, a frequent collaborator with King, directed the film.

Reception:

The film received mixed reviews upon its release. Critics were divided on its campy tone and reliance on horror tropes. However, it has since developed a cult following, particularly among fans of Stephen King's work and those who enjoy over-the-top horror films.

Themes:

The film explores themes of motherhood, repressed sexuality, and the battle between good and evil. The sleepwalkers represent a twisted, parasitic version of familial love, while Tanya represents innocence and the power of ordinary people to fight against supernatural threats.
