Simutrans is a cross-platform simulation game in which players manage transport networks for passengers, mail, and goods by land, air, and sea. The game's name is a portmanteau of "simulation" and "transportation."

The primary goal of Simutrans is to build and maintain a profitable and efficient transportation system within a simulated economy. Players must construct infrastructure such as roads, railways, airports, and harbors, as well as purchase and manage vehicles like trains, buses, trucks, ships, and airplanes. Passengers and goods are transported between different locations (towns, factories, mines, etc.) based on demand and supply, influenced by factors such as distance, speed, and the reliability of the transportation services.

Simutrans features a complex economic model where the player's actions directly influence the growth and development of the simulated world. Towns grow and industries develop based on the availability of transportation services. Players must carefully balance expansion with profitability to avoid bankruptcy.

The game is known for its extensive customization options. "Paksets" are sets of graphics and data that define the appearance of vehicles, buildings, and other game elements. Different paksets can drastically alter the game's look and feel, allowing players to experience Simutrans in a variety of historical and futuristic settings. The game also supports user-created modifications (mods) that can alter gameplay mechanics and add new features.
