Kapaemahu

Kapaemahu is a significant historical and cultural site located in Waikiki, on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i. It commemorates four legendary mahu (individuals of dual male and female spirit, or transgender individuals in modern parlance) healers who arrived from Tahiti long ago. These healers, named Kapaemahu, Kinohi, Kahaloa, and Kukane, possessed extraordinary powers and are credited with bringing healing arts to the Hawaiian people.

After their arrival, the mahu generously shared their knowledge of medicine and healing practices with the local population. Following their time among the Hawaiians, and before their departure, they transferred their healing powers into four large stones. These stones were then placed on the site that is now known as Kapaemahu. The stones serve as a powerful and enduring reminder of the mahu's contributions.

The Kapaemahu stones were once prominent and revered but were eventually neglected and buried. In the early 20th century, they were unearthed and subsequently relocated. In 2022, after a period of restoration and community engagement, the stones were returned to their original location and re-dedicated, revitalizing the site as a place of healing, remembrance, and cultural significance.

The story of Kapaemahu and the stones represents a vital aspect of Hawaiian history, highlighting the importance of healing, the acceptance of diverse gender identities within traditional Hawaiian culture, and the ongoing efforts to preserve and honor cultural heritage. The site serves as a reminder of the knowledge and contributions of the mahu and their profound impact on the well-being of the Hawaiian people.
