Anopterus
Anopterus is a genus of evergreen shrubs or small trees in the family Escalloniaceae. It is endemic to Australia, specifically found in Tasmania and eastern mainland Australia. The genus comprises two species: Anopterus glandulosus and Anopterus macleayanus.
Anopterus glandulosus, commonly known as Native Laurel or Tasmanian Laurel, is a shrub or small tree endemic to Tasmania. It is characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant, white bell-shaped flowers that bloom in spring. The plant prefers moist, sheltered locations in rainforest environments.
Anopterus macleayanus, commonly known as Macleay Laurel or Queensland Laurel, is found in the rainforests of eastern mainland Australia, primarily in New South Wales and Queensland. It is similar in appearance to A. glandulosus, with glossy green leaves and white, bell-shaped flowers. It also favors moist, shaded habitats.
Both species are noted for their attractive foliage and flowers, making them occasionally cultivated as ornamental plants. However, their specific requirements for cool, moist conditions limit their widespread cultivation. The genus name "Anopterus" is derived from Greek, referring to the absence of wings on the seeds.
