WHDH-TV (channel 5)
WHDH-TV, virtual channel 5 (UHF digital channel 35), is an independent television station licensed to Boston, Massachusetts, United States. The station is owned by Sunbeam Television. WHDH-TV's studios are located in the Bulfinch Triangle neighborhood of Boston, and its transmitter is located in Needham.
Originally, channel 5 in Boston was occupied by WHDH-TV, owned by the Boston Herald-Traveler newspaper. However, in 1972, after a lengthy and controversial license challenge related to the newspaper's business practices, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) awarded the license to Boston Broadcasters, Inc., which launched WCVB-TV on March 19, 1972.
Sunbeam Television acquired the intellectual property, including the call sign, from the former WHDH-TV (then operating as WLVI) in 2006. Sunbeam launched the current WHDH-TV on January 1, 2017, after its affiliation agreement with NBC ended, and NBC launched its own station in the market, WBTS-LD. Prior to January 1, 2017, channel 5 was affiliated with NBC.
As an independent station, WHDH-TV broadcasts local news, syndicated programming, and sports. Its news operation is a significant part of its programming schedule, and the station competes with other major news outlets in the Boston market.
