Epostane

Epostane is a synthetic steroid analog classified as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD). This enzyme is crucial in the biosynthesis of several steroid hormones, including progesterone, cortisol, and androgens.

As an inhibitor of 3β-HSD, epostane effectively blocks the conversion of pregnenolone to progesterone, 17α-hydroxypregnenolone to 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) to androstenedione. This results in a reduction in the production of these downstream hormones.

Epostane is primarily used in veterinary medicine for the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) in dogs. By inhibiting cortisol synthesis, epostane helps to alleviate the clinical signs associated with this condition, such as increased thirst, urination, appetite, and abdominal enlargement.

Epostane's effects are generally reversible upon cessation of treatment. However, the dosage and frequency of administration must be carefully monitored by a veterinarian to avoid complications such as adrenal insufficiency. Side effects can include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia. Regular monitoring of adrenal function is recommended during epostane therapy.
