Kastoria (regional unit)
Kastoria is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of Western Macedonia, in the northwestern part of the country. The capital of the regional unit is the city of Kastoria, which is situated on a peninsula jutting into Lake Orestiada (also known as Lake Kastoria).
The regional unit is primarily mountainous and sparsely populated. It borders Albania to the west, the regional units of Florina to the north, Kozani to the east, and Grevena to the south.
The economy of Kastoria is traditionally based on agriculture, fur processing and trade, and tourism. The fur industry has been significant throughout its history, with the city of Kastoria once being a major center for fur production. However, the industry has declined in recent years. Tourism has become increasingly important, with visitors drawn to the scenic beauty of Lake Orestiada and the surrounding mountains, as well as the historic architecture of the city of Kastoria.
The area has a rich history, dating back to ancient times. It was part of various empires and kingdoms before becoming part of modern Greece. The region is known for its many Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, monasteries, and traditional villages.
